Beau whooped as his Pangoro unleashed a vicious overhead HAMMER ARM that sent the metallic-looking Delibird flying backward into the rock wall of the Chasm, causing it to spark uncontrollably and collapse, unmoving.

"Man, these are some weird-lookin' pokémon, don't you think?" The Pangoro grunted assent as he turned around and ambled lazily back to his trainer, who surveyed the research station with a careful eye. "That one wasn't gonna make it through, but we gotta stay on guard, brah. These guys said they can't hold out if the wild pokémon here keep up the speed they've been attacking with. Can't wait for that help to get here, you feel me?"

He'd arrived at the station a little over an hour prior, and already had to fend off a half-dozen incursions by these smaller, bizarre Paradox pokémon. Granted, he'd been the closest Ranger to the area, even if he was only a green-banded trainee, but he fortunately had experience that other trainees would be wanting for - enough to keep the little ones at bay, though the occasional fearsome roar from deeper in the Chasm admittedly had him sweating from time to time.

The summons he'd received via text had assured him that backup would arrive in due course, but he'd had yet to see anything like backup materialize, so he and his Pangoro were doing their best to simply keep the station safe. Soon, hopefully, his help would arrive before one of the larger Paradox beasts did.

Ollie was held up by his meeting with Councilwoman freya morningstar, relaying how the Rangers were doing with the latest excursions, so that he only arrived on the scene just as he watched the massive Pangoro set the metallic-looking Delibird flying.

[break][break] Ollie whistled sharp behind his teeth as he watched the bird flung out of distance, flying across the field like a comet.

[break][break] "That must have been a home run, huh?" The Head Ranger jogged up behind the other ranger, grinning, as he shoved his hands into his pockets. His Wyrdeer trotted up behind him, sniffing the pair curiously in greeting.

[break][break] Ollie offered his hand out for the other man to shake.

[break][break] "Nice job there, bud! Beau Fontaine right?"

To his credit, Beau did not jump at the voice that sounded from behind him after the latest scuffle, instead turning around to orient on the new arrival. He shrugged, returning the grin easily. "Hey, brah, you gotta do what you gotta do t'keep the eggheads safe, am I right?"

He shook the other man's hand heartily, the Pangoro lumbering over to stand behind him, alert and surveying the Wyrdeer with apparent disinterest that struck a strange dichotomy with his trainer's effusiveness. "That's me!" he affirmed. "Thanks, just tryin' to hold it down 'till the other guy shows up. Though, uh, I guess that's you!"

He gave the other man a once-over, scrubbing at the back of his head with an awkward laugh. Then he caught sight of the badge on Ollie's uniform. "Oh shi- uh, shoot, you're the Head Ranger! Good to meet you, dude, this whole Chasm thing is my first real gig out of Dewford!"

A rumbling growl sounded from deeper within the Chasm, closer than the last, and Beau glanced to Ollie questioningly. "You're the boss, brah, what's the plan?"

[break][break] A thumb pointed at his own chest, he beamed at the other Ranger.

[break][break] Ollie always enjoyed working with other Rangers, even before he had been Head Ranger and even for the ones that worked outside of Evergrande. It allowed him the opportunity to travel and to get to know others. It was how he had been able to build up good relationships with those like wren rourke, Elise Calcifet or Genevieve Cromwell.

[break][break] As the other pointed out his badge and status though, Ollie couldn't help but let out a sheepish laugh. He rubbed the back of his neck. "Oh yeah, that's me too. Nice to meet 'cha officially — I'm Ollie."

[break][break] Though, given the way the other greeted him, maybe he knew him already.

[break][break] "We're gonna kick them straight outta the water," he said with a smirk. "But let's let them come to us first, yeah?"

[break][break] The growl from within the chasm grew louder, the earth beginning to gently rumble beneath their feet.

[break][break] Throwing a pokeball into the air, the Head Ranger released his Venusaur.

[break][break] "Frog! Put 'em to sleep!"

[break][break] Letting out a mighty roar, the grass-type leaned back. His massive petals shook with effort before a sudden dust of SLEEP POWDER sprayed out in front of them towards the incoming charge of Paradox Pokemon.

[break][break] Behind him, Ollie glanced at Beau and gave a chuckle. "Real different from Dewford, isn't it?"

Beau's grin widened, and he nodded. "Too cool! Now I know they're gonna be in good hands for sure!" He hadn't had the chance to work with many rangers yet outside of his little island corner, but he had to admit there was something to this "networking" thing people talked about. How else would he have ever found out that the head ranger was, like, a dude? A cool dude?

His attentioned turned to the bottleneck at the entrance deeper into the Chasm, and he forgot to really do anything as Ollie's Venusaur blipped into existence and blanketed the path of the oncoming horde with SLEEP POWDER. "Hey, uh, hey," Beau murmured under his breath, elbowing Torben in the side surreptitiously. "You got anything like that you can do?"

The Pangoro regarded Beau with an impassive scowl, then offered a singular low grunt in the negative. "Fine, fine!" Beau retorted, holding his hands up defensively. "Just thought I'd ask! You know how the good guys always level up or get some kinda weird power upgrade before the big fight! One at a time it is, I guess."

A surprising number of the oncoming Paradox Pokemon succumbed to the Sleep Powder, falling to the ground between one stride and the next, but a scattered contingent still made its way forward. "Playin' it cool, got it, brah, sir!" Beau called to Ollie in response, crossing his arms as he regarded the persistent attackers who made their way toward the station. A Brute Bonnet, incongruously, was the leader of the vanguard, and Torben obligingly offered a NIGHT SLASH that bisected the pokemon's protective foliage veil.

In a matter of minutes, the horde of Paradox pokemon fell prey to Frog's sleep powder. It littered the ground like stones at the bottom of a pond, their metal exterior shimmering into a peaceful slumber.

[break][break] It reminded him of the tests that he'd done with GIDEON GRAVES all those months ago — how different were these pokemon really compared to their modern originals?

[break][break] "Great job!" Ollie hollered after Beau, as he watched his pokemon slice through a Brute Bonnet.

[break][break] The threat diverted for now, the Head Ranger stepped forward around the bodies. Staring down at them, he put his hands on his hips and cocked his head to the side.

[break][break] "I wonder how many of these are," he murmured. "Or where they're coming from."

[break][break] Glancing up, Ollie looked up to see his Pidgeot flying through and dropping off one of the supply packs. The Head Ranger caught it in his hands, before kneeling down and prying the box open. Inside it was a net that they could throw around the Paradox pokemon and later herd them to safety.

[break][break] "Come help me with this, yeah?" he said, turning to Beau Fontaine.

[break][break] After a moment, he attempted conversation.

[break][break] "So you're a Ranger at Dewford, yeah? How do you like it?"

Beau blinked, then grinned broadly as the Venusaur's sleep powder negated the entire threat in only a few short moments. "Heck yeah!" he whooped, punching the air. "Dude, that was awesome!" Since he'd joined the Rangers, he'd been subject to missions that were pretty simple, if he had to say. Situations like this, though, were out of the norm of what he was used to dealing with.

He wasn't the dullest knife in the drawer - although some people would probably say otherwise - but in his experience, most problems went away if you punched them hard enough, and that's what he'd trained his pokemon to do. Seeing the Head Ranger calm an entire herd of angry Paradox pokemon without once landing an actual blow, though - maybe there was something to that. Surely Torben would have been way more out of breath if he'd had to take the suckers out one by one.

When the Pidgeot dropped a supply pack right into Ollie's hands, Beau grinned again, jogging over to help shake out the net. "Man, you're ready for anything, aren't you?" He commented, impressed.

At his question, Beau shrugged a bit, no less enthusiastic. "Yeah, brah, it's great! Way more chill than running a Gym, I gotta say, couldn't'a been better timing. jack wainwright got me all set up to start patrols, an' this guy Navy came by to fill me in on the Dewford situation a couple'a weeks ago."

He grunted, untangling a small snarl in the net before he continued. "Feel like if I hadn'ta left, maybe it wouldn't have been so bad off, but who's to say, I guess? Anyway, it's great bein' back there, and learnin' the Ranger ops has been a blast, dude. I feel like I'm really helpin' something for the first time in a while, y'know?"

"oh man," he said with a warm chuckle. "i dunno about everything. when you've been a ranger for as long as me, you kinda just think up things as you go."

[break][break] he still remembered when he and Laurence Anderson had been starting out. how many times had they fumbled along the way? way too many to count.

[break][break] twisting apart the net and placing it over the sleeping paradox pokemon, ollie glanced up with surprise as the other mentioned his gym position. "oh, you were a gym leader?" now that he thought about it, the name seemed familiar. but ollie had never really been interested in hoenn's gym circuit anyway. "jack's great," he said with a grin. "i fought alongside him and Gunner Graves in the raid together."

[break][break] though maybe he would reach out to jack wainwright at some point later to touchbase with him. ollie liked to do that with every one of the rangers, anyway.

[break][break] "navy too," ollie agreed, only to falter. "man - wish he'd join the squad though. i've been trying to get him to join for years!" ollie laughed. "that guy's way too obsessed with his gym, though."

[break][break] at the mention back to the ranger corps though, the head ranger beamed once more. his face glowed. ollie loved the rangers.

[break][break] "i know what you mean. i felt exactly like that when i was first starting out - as a college kid, you know. i really wanted something to do. get my hands dirty. i didn't want to be stuck behind a desk all day."

[break][break] ironic now, of course, given his current position.

Beau nodded, a touch of ruefulness creeping into the expression as he helped secure the net around the sleeping pokemon. "Yeah, for a little while. It was awesome, an' I got to meet so many people, but it just didn't feel like the right fit at the time, feel me?"

He cinched the net closed, standing and ruffling a hand through his hair absently. "Yeah, Jack's awesome, and I got to partner with Gunner up the Chasm a while back. Guy was great in a fight, but seemed...I dunno, kinda uptight."

When Ollie brought Navy up, Beau tilted his head curiously. "Huh, really? Well, maybe you'll get your shot, brah, he said somebody else is gonna be takin' over his Gym soon. Don't ask me who, though, it's a heck of a name and I can't remember all of it," he laughed nervously. Thinking about the rangers, though, only renewed his enthusiasm.

"Yeah, it's somethin' really special, I can tell. I've only been doin' it for a couple months, an' I've already been to so many new places an' helped a ton of people and pokemon. I didn't know what it really meant until I got into it, but I'm glad I did. Somebody's gotta be there, y'know?"
